Diet Therapy and Kidney Disease Every year, 30,000 people start receiving dialysis and now we have 297,126 dialysis patients in Japan. 19,000 patients of them die every year. Dialysis costs much not only for patients but also Japanese county. Also, it is difficult for patients to spend a normal life because they must go to hospital for their dialysis three days a week. In recent years, the total expenditure on health have been increasing rapidly (about 1 trillion yen medical expenses dialysis) so that diet before starting dialysis for kidney disease, so-called "the period saving kidney function" are now focused. It is relatively easier to block progression of the kidney dysfunction by taking the particular diet. The key to avoid complications or change in blood pressure, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia such as hydration and painful dialysis is to start and maintain appropriate diet therapy. We are a group of medical doctors, pharmacists, registered dietitians and counselors. Our aim is the contribution to the improvement of patients welfare (QOL, quality of life) by planning cooking classes with starch products and by providing nutrition consultation for the people to postpone start of kidney dialysis.
